Smut Slam – not for the easily offended!

Have you ever heard of ‘Smut Slam’ before?

I certainly hadn’t and didn’t have the first clue what to expect.  I only heard about it through ‘Alternative Nightlife’, one of the best Meetup groups in London (in my humble opinion)!  I’ll tell you all about that in another post.

Well….how to best explain what it is?  I think this is best summed up by the events tag line ” where sexy and storytelling collide.”  As the promotional blurb states, it’s a fast-paced storytelling open mic based on real life, where individuals (Smut Slammers)  sign up on the night to tell a 5-minute dirty story based on their real lives.  The theme tonight was ‘firsts.’

Each story was judged by a panel and scored (double entre not intended).  In between each set of stories, the crowd were invited to write anonymous anecdotes, questions and confessions which were read out by the host, Cameryn Moore from a ‘Fuck Bucket,’ which was the funniest bit of the night for me.   There sure was a lot of swearing going on!

So I and a couple of friends rocked up to the Rose & Crown (71-73 Torriano Avenue, Kentish Town.  NW5 2SG) to check it out.  The event was actually held in the basement venue and was heaving within minutes of opening up.  It is clearly a very popular night.

It was a good night, although the venue was way too small for the size of the audience – a large proportion of which had to stand in an adjoining annexe, so they couldn’t see the stage and had to make do with just hearing the show.  That couldn’t have been particularly edifying for the £10 entrance charge…

The show was funny, but honestly I left there wondering whether sexual experiences in my youth had been so throwaway and meaningless.  Maybe they had, but to hear the stories of peoples’ first 3-somes,  hand jobs in cars with total strangers and S&M experiences within minutes of meeting made me feel strangely more reflective than entertained.  What got me was how young these Smut Slammers were and how wholesome they looked.  I was quite shocked by the stories, which in turn shocked me really, as I think I’m pretty broadminded for an old girl.

I learnt something about myself tonight.  Despite being a strong advocate for ‘live and let live,’ I really am an old fashioned girl at heart!
